Top 5 Reasons for Hair Fall

Last few days I had some trouble falling asleep. “My skin is getting drier because of the changing weather and I am experiencing the worst hair fall”, I contemplated.  Today when I woke up, my body was craving for a hot shower in the morning. Quickly I took shower and as I dried my hair, I could see strands of hair on the comb, I got a bit worried. I googled as I wanted to know all the reasons for hair fall. Now usually such things do not psych me out but this time, I had a compelling reason to be worried.

I pondered, lately I can see hair fall everywhere, on the pillow, while brushing my hair, in the sink while brushing my teeth, on my clothes while organising my wardrobe! Quickly I ran my eyes over my things and introspective, “How much hair fall is actually normal?”, I asked myself nervously.

Though, I was told that it is normal to lose up to about 100 hairs a day when I comb. In addition to this, after researching I discovered that there is a process where hair grows for a few years, goes into the transitional period, and then rests for a few months. This is a 3-phase cycle. And this cycle consists of the shedding, resting and hair regrowth. The process when one experiences no hair loss is called Telogen which is the name of the resting stage of the hair growth cycle.

There are many types of hair loss and to find how to control hair fall is quite onerous.

Here I am mentioning 5 reasons for hair fall.

    1. Vitamin Deficiency: Vitamins like Riboflavin, biotin, folate, and vitamin B12 deficiencies have been associated with causes of hairfall and hair shedding. Health conditions like thyroid disease, iron deficiency anaemia, etc. can also play a role in hair fall.
If one is experiencing a lot of hairfall then it is good to consult a dermatologist who is trained to diagnose conditions that affect our skin, hair, and nails. A certified trichologist who is an expert in hair and scalp can also help you in finding out the reason for hairfall. Through a blood test diagnosis, one can surely be able to find out about the vitamin deficiency, if any.

    1. Change in Hormones : Hormonal changes like those in puberty, pregnancy and menopause can also be reasons for hairfall in women.
Shortly after giving birth to a child I experienced a lot of hair thinning and ultimately the worst hair fall. Yes, with that beautiful “preggo glow” one can experience the dark side of the high estrogen levels. I searched for every possible hair care tips to take care of my mane during that period but in vain. Hormonal imbalance can cause hair loss during menopause in women. Moreover, the body produces more androgens during around the time of menopause due to the loss of estrogen and progesterone in the body. Increased Androgens levels cause facial hair (a condition known as virilizing), and shrink hair follicles, and thus result in hair thinning/hair loss.

    1. Stress: I am known in my friend circle as an easy-going person but hey I get stressed out too. It becomes almost impossible for me to find my zen and inner peace. However, I have realised that with stress comes piles of baggage. It can affect our life altogether and not to forget our health. Stress ruins our heart and the immune system. And if there is someone who can be an ambassador for stress…it would be me smiling and standing on the pedestal of time and saying, “been there, done that”.

However, the best thing if any to count here is that the hairfall due to stress is temporary and hair loss that happened due to stress or anxiety will surely be gone as you start putting an effort to keep yourself more happy, placid, and calm. As the stress level goes back to normal, the situation of hairfall will be rectified with time.

    1. Harmful chemicals & harsh treatments : Celebrities walking the red carpet and advertisements all over Tv and social media creates an itch to experiment with our hair and clothes. While experimenting with your clothes is always a good idea, I am pretty sure using a lot of chemicals and harsh treatments is not. Count on this one, speaking from personal experience, it is a bad idea.

“Why not to jump on the bandwagon, celebrities go for styled hair all the time as per their mood and inspiration, I thought”. And so, started the endless game of investing in all kinds of hair products.

Nonetheless, changing the products often and due to chemicals present in them made my hair dull, dry, brittle and above all I started experiencing hair fall.

  1. Heredity: Family history of baldness (heredity) can also cause baldness with aging in both men and women, though more commonly found in men, and such a condition is called Androgenic Alopecia.
There are various treatments to cure any type of hair loss, however, taking help from a professional is highly recommended before undergoing any kind of hair or scalp treatment.
We need to remember that hair shedding does happen in phases and not every condition triggers trouble. Hair that is in shedding period (telogen) will fall/shed and that is pretty normal and harmless.
